Figma upgrades, data storytelling cards, Tableau hits 8 million vizzes
By Jane Zhang

Last month, the infogr8 team held our annual internal summit. We celebrated successes from the past year and looked ahead with plans for growth. With referral as the biggest growth opportunity for us, one of the recurring themes from the summit was building relationships. So we’re doubling our efforts to put our team out there and demonstrate the value we bring to clients.
The introduction of the Healthcare pod this year is an indication of our team’s expansion and growth—new projects have been coming in and we’ll be looking for more support in the coming months. I’ll share them with you through this newsletter as they come in.
I’ve been busy working with writers to create articles on dataviz. We had so much interest from this quarter’s themes and the writing slots filled up quickly. I’ll release new themes in September for the next quarter, so stay tuned!
Without further ado, here’s the latest roundup of dataviz updates.
What’s Happening in Data Viz
- Game-changing Figma updates: Figma announced major updates at the Config Conference in June that would redefine how teams design and develop products. New features include Dev Mode, Variables, advanced prototyping, and more.
- Svelte 4 released: A maintenance update that improves performance and developer experience. Their new docs and tutorial look super slick.
- Tableau Public now has 8 million vizzes: A mind-boggling amount of dataviz has been created on the platform. Explore the top 8 most-favourited dataviz.
- Data Storytelling Cards: A novel way to craft data stories, from the author of Delivering Data Analytics.
- React Graph Gallery: This newly released resource offers 100+ graph examples and teaches basic concepts of dataviz with React and D3.js.
- Information is Beautiful Awards 2023: Submissions opened in the middle of July. Enter yours before the deadline on August 15th.
Upcoming Events

Learning resources
- A day in the life of a data vis freelancer: A glimpse into Andy Kirk’s (Visualising Data) life as a freelancer.
- Teaching the Foundations of Data Visualization: This is a great read and resource if you are preparing a course or workshop on dataviz.
- Adding social media icons to charts with {ggplot2}: Although this topic may seem trivial, I’ve seen too many dataviz shared without the creators properly attributed. Add social media links into your viz so you’re recognized for your work.
- Emphasize what you want readers to see with color: I’m a big fan of Lisa’s posts on Datawrapper—she distils complex dataviz concepts into easy-to-follow guides. Here’s her first post after her parental leave and it’s all about colour. Bonus: here’s an awesome thread she started about colour keys.
- Threlte 3D-Dataviz Tutorial: If you ever wanted to move past the 2D world, here’s a series of tutorials on how to create 3D dataviz with Three.js, Svelte.js and D3.js.
- Mini dataviz courses in a Twitter thread: Koen Van den Eeckhout has been creating a series of threads that cover dataviz fundamentals. Here’s a helpful one on typography.
- Working with Figma and Observable: This 90-second video explains how you can export your work in Observable into Figma.
